Beacons are volumes of a World under the control of an individual Citizen. They are established by placing a CampfireCampfire or a Beacon ControlBeacon Control, which places one or two Plots, and can be enlarged by placing addition Plots with a Beacon PlotterBeacon Plotter and reduced in size using a Beacon Plot RemoverBeacon Plot Remover. All Plots in a Beacon must be contiguous.

Beacons can be named.

All the space vertically above or below any Plot in a Beacon becomes reserved. That means they are natural wild spaces that any Citizen may harvest or mine, but they may only be plotted by the owner of the Beacon. Beacons of more than one Citizen that touch along at least 3 plots becomes a Settlement and the Citizen with the most Prestige will become the designated leader.

Beacons will expire after a certain amount of time if they only have a Campfire or their Beacon Control is not fuelled with Beacon Fuel. Once a Beacon expires its contents are available for any Citizen to loot and it is subject to Regeneration, reverting to its natural state over a period of time. Gleam Club membership allows Beacons to last for longer periods of time by performing some sort of magic auto-fuelling. Gleam Club membership applies to all Citizens on a Player's account.

There is no known limit to the number of Beacons a Citizen (or Player) may own, subject of course to the number of Plots available to the Citizen. There is no requirement for a Citizen to have any Beacons. The first Beacon a Citizen places becomes the Home Beacon: travel to the Home Beacon from the Sanctum or through Warping. The Home Beacon may be changed to any Beacon owned by the Citizen through the Locations Menu.

Beacons can be used to secure strategic resources or locations. For example, one might find a rich resource deposit and claim it before anyone else, then set up a shop on the surface and sell the goods.[citation needed]

Beacons accumulate Prestige from the blocks contained within them. A complicated formula is used to calculate the prestige based on the basic Prestige value of each block, the distribution of different types of blocks, the amount of Chiseling and the source or origin of blocks. The addition of Furnishings, Fittings, and Crafted Blocks can improve the prestige of a Beacon.
